IDRIES SHAH’S LEGACY
Idries Shah devoted his life to collecting, translating and adapting key works of Sufi classical literature for the needs of the West. Over half a century, his works have been used by psychologists and therapists, school teachers and lawyers, social workers and ordinary members of the public to better understand human thought and behaviour. Called by some ‘practical philosophy’, Shah’s books represent a distillation of centuries of Sufi and Islamic thought aimed at helping to develop human potential to its fullest. The works stress virtues such as common sense, clear thinking and humour to counter cant and religious dogma.
Shah’s books have been translated into dozens of languages, sold millions of copies, and are regarded as a bridge between East and West. Thirty-five of Shah’s books are now available through ISF across multiple formats.

Tahir is a prolific novelist, travel writer and documentary maker. Perhaps his best-known book, The Caliph’s House, describes his experiences moving his family to Morocco and living in a rambling Casablanca mansion infested with Jinn. Tahir has often spoken about how his father strove to teach his children through stories. These included the escapades of Nasrudin, the wise fool of Sufi folklore. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Tahir began to devote a great deal of time and energy into establishing and promoting a ‘cultural bridge’ between East and West. He has lectured widely on the legacy of science in medieval Islam and its role in creating a foundation for the Renaissance.
