Afghanistan: 32,000 books were distributed for free to schools, universities, and public libraries

The generous donations to the Idries Shah Foundation made it possible for us to send 32,000 books by Idries Shah and related Eastern classics to Afghanistan – where they were distributed for free to schools, universities, and public libraries.

After months of planning, and many more on the seas and roads between Europe and the Hindu Kush, a major donation of English-language books reached its destination in late 2014 – the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Relating to Afghan culture, history and folklore, as well as Oriental themes, the books were distributed free to public schools and libraries throughout Afghanistan. A kind of literary Ark, these books were desperately needed.

They included titles such as Afghanistan of the Afghans, The Sufis, A Perfumed Scorpion, The World of Nasrudin, Afghan Caravan, The Alchemy of Happiness, Caravan of Dreams, Kara Kush and Alone in Arabian Nights.

Many of the titles came from the corpus of work written by Sayed Idries Shah. The donation was made by The Idries Shah Foundation, thanks to the generous donations we received from the Friends of the Idries Shah Foundation; the distribution was facilitated by Books With Wings, a Canadian charity based at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine.

Many thanks to the Friends for their generous assistance, which made this donation of Idries Shah books to Afghanistan possible.

Malala Yousafzai on ISF

We are pleased to say that Malala Yousafzai has also shown her support of the ISF book donations to Afghanistan:

"The Idries Shah Foundation is doing a commendable job by sending thousands of books for children in Afghanistan. This war stricken country could be healed by books and learning. Reading makes a nation great and the books sent by The Idries Shah Foundation will really help.”

~ Malala Yousafzai
Nobel Laureate for Peace 2014
